10 Questions You Should Ask Before an AI Consultation

The decision to invest in artificial intelligence is a big step for many Swiss SMEs. Choosing the right partner can make the difference between a successful transformation and an expensive disappointment. Before commissioning an AI consultation, you should ask yourself – and your potential partner – these 10 questions.

1. What Problem Do We Want to Solve?

Question 1: What specific problem do we want to solve? The most common mistake in AI projects is the lack of problem definition. "We want to use AI" is not a project goal. "We want to reduce the processing time for quote requests from 2 hours to 15 minutes" is. The more specific the problem, the more measurable the success.

2. Do We Have the Right Data?

Question 2: Do we have the right data? AI needs data – but not always big data. For many SME applications, existing business data is perfectly sufficient. Clarify in advance: What data do we have? In what quality? Is it digitally available? A good AI consultation always begins with a data inventory.

3. How Is Success Measured?

Question 3: How does the AI agency measure success? Reputable providers define KPIs in advance and measure ROI transparently. Ask for specific metrics: time savings in hours, cost reduction in francs, error rate before/after. If an agency cannot name measurable goals, that's a warning sign.

4. Industry Experience

Question 4: What experience does the agency have in our industry? Industry knowledge accelerates implementation and reduces risks. Ask for reference projects in your or a related industry. Ideally, the agency can present concrete case studies with measurable results.

5. How Does Implementation Work?

Question 5: What does the implementation look like specifically? Have the project process explained in detail: What phases are there? What milestones? What is delivered when? How long until the first measurable result? A clear project plan protects against unpleasant surprises.

6. Data Protection and Security

Question 6: What happens with our data? Data protection is particularly important for Swiss companies. Clarify: Where is data processed and stored? Is data shared with third parties? Does the solution comply with the Swiss Data Protection Act (DSG)? Is personal data anonymized?

7. Total Costs and Investment

Question 7: What is the total investment? Don't just ask about project costs, but about the total investment: one-time implementation costs, ongoing license or hosting costs, training effort for employees, maintenance and support. Reputable providers communicate all costs transparently.

8. What Happens If Things Go Wrong?

Question 8: What happens if the project doesn't work? No AI project is guaranteed to succeed. What matters is how the agency handles setbacks. Are there pilot phases to minimize risk? Are there exit clauses or success guarantees? How is iteration handled when initial results are unsatisfactory?

9. Employee Involvement

Question 9: Will our employees be involved and trained? The best AI solution fails if employees don't use it. Ask about: Are there training sessions and workshops? Are key users trained? How is team acceptance ensured? A good partner actively accompanies the change process.

10. Long-Term Partnership

Question 10: What does the long-term partnership look like? AI is not a one-time project but a continuous process. Clarify: Does the agency offer ongoing support? How are improvements and updates handled? Is there a roadmap for further development? The right partner thinks long-term.

Bonus: Technology and Business Understanding

Does the agency understand not only the technology but also our business? The best results emerge when technical expertise meets business understanding. An AI agency that only talks about algorithms but doesn't understand your business model won't deliver practically relevant solutions.
